Sir Robert Walter Carden had a successful stockbroking company in the City of London in the mid-19thcentury, however he is better remembered for his political career. He served as Sheriff of London in 1850 and was elected as Lord Mayor of London in 1857. Carden was elected to the House of Commons as one of two representatives for Gloucester in 1857, a seat he held until 1859. Carden was then out of Parliament for more than twenty years, but returned in 1880 when he was elected as MP for Barnstaple, which he remained until 1885. In June 1887, aged 85, Sir Robert Carden was created 1stBaronet Carden of Molesey.
Three versions of overprint used by Carden have been recorded, all found on the 1d lilac Inland Revenue stamp (1860-1867).
